One of the greatest challenges that a Christian faces is to stay sexually pure. Great destinies have been destroyed in the face of sexual impurity; Samson being one such example. Sexual temptation is, and will always be, one of the greatest weapons the enemy has against an individual. The number of casualties in Christendom, who have fallen prey to this one attack, is mind-boggling. Ministries have crashed, churches shut down and revivals collapsed as the leaders have plunged into sexual sin.
So how does a believer stay pure? How can an individual stay pure in today’s day and age?
Here are four points that I am certain will help you. These are very practical, and easy to follow if you are looking to stay pure.
If I may say so, this one tip is Joseph’s greatest contribution in the Bible. In the face of sexual temptation, just run. Not just Joseph, but the Holy Spirit himself advises us to “flee youthful lusts.” 2 Timothy 2:22
This gets even more interesting when you realise that the Holy Spirit teaches us to “resist the devil and he will flee”, but when it comes to lust, He tells us to RUN! So run away from everything that has the potential to tempt you. Don’t be caught alone with him or her!
“Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.” 1 Corinthians 6:18
Accept Responsibility for Your Moral Choices
Remember that you don’t ‘fall’ into immorality. Don’t kid yourself. No one tricked you into it. Way before you fall into the sin, you start by entertaining a ‘thought’. This ‘thought’ becomes an action, and the ‘action’ becomes a ‘habit’ which in turn becomes your ‘destiny’. It all begins with the ‘thought’. When the ‘thought’ comes, cancel it then and there in the name of Jesus.
We do not fall into immorality. We walk into it. Indeed, sometimes we run headlong into it. We must realize from the beginning that immorality is a choice. It is not something that happens to people. It is something that people make happen.
Be Accountable To God
This has helped me immensely. Instead of sharing my weakness with people who can use it against me, I chose to have a direct deal with God. My deal was simple. “Lord, I need help. However, if I goof up, I will not run away, but come back and seek forgiveness.”
Now I know this may sound like a fairy tale, but it works! Meditate on the Word. This is so important. Philippians 4:8. Spend time in prayer. Ask The Spirit to help you in your weakness. Be diligent about what you allow into your thought life. Choose your company wisely. “Bad company corrupts good character.” 1 Corinthians 15:33
Fall In Love with The Creator Of Love
And, the counterfeits will pale away. One night, in prayer, The Lord shared this with me. This is the key. If I can look at the face of Jesus, nothing else will be able to tempt me. I am the body of Jesus Christ. If I sin with my body, I am sinning against the body of Jesus (Click to Tweet).
I don’t know your struggle and what you may have done in the past. But if it is purity that you desire, He will give it to you. If you are tired of living in sin, it is never too late to return to true love. He will not force it on you. It begins with your desire and cry. So ask Him to bring you back to where you belong and give you a fresh revelation of what love is really supposed to look like.
I pray that this post will encourage you to start afresh! Find your second chance in God!
